Description
Grover Cleveland Letter of Condolence to Ulysses S. Grant's Widow on the Day of his Death Signed. Three integral pages, 11.75" x 9.25", on Executive Mansion letterhead, Washington, July 23, 1885. Sometime in early 1885, former President Grant, a heavy cigar and pipe smoker, learned that he was dying from throat cancer. He succumbed to the disease on July 23, 1885. President Grover Cleveland, learning the news, had this letter written to Grant's widow, in part: "Obeying the dictates of my personal feelings, and in accord with what I am sure is the universal sentiment of his fellow countrymen towards your late husband, I am solicitous that every tribute of respect and affection should be duly rendered and with constant consideration of your personal wishes on the subject." He further asks that she convey "any intimation of the wishes of yourself and your children in respect to the selection of the place of burial, the conduct of the funeral ceremonies, and the part which may be borne by those charged with the administration of the government." Following Grant's death, President Cleveland ordered a period of national mourning to last thirty days. Smoothed folds show the beginnings of separation at the edges.Auction Info
