Description
Zachary Taylor: A Rare and Sought After Lithopane Portrait. Made for Henry Clay and Winfield Scott as well as Taylor, these rare items are among the most sought after political display items of this era among sophisticated hobbyists. Probably fewer than five examples of the Taylor are known in collections. The technique involves executing a portrait in a parian-like material with carved out design elements which, when light is shone through from behind, show remarkable subtlety and texture by varying the thickness of the material. The Edward C. Gillette collection is perhaps the only one of which we are aware that had two of these rare lithopanes. The Scott example was hotly contested in our March 2008 auction, where it sold for $10,456.25. This Taylor specimen is in beautiful condition, the lithopane itself measuring 6" x 8.375".
