Description

Zachary Taylor: Early Patriotic Paper Folding Fan. 17" x 9" opened. The fan pictures a young Zachary Taylor, in full uniform of a major general, topped by an American eagle and shield and flanked by a trophy of arms. On each side is a battle scene, the Battle of Lundy's Lane on the left and the Battle of Chippewa on the right. Taylor commanded the United States 6th Infantry Regiment that fought in both engagements during the War of 1812. Taylor received the nickname "Old Rough and Ready" during the Seminole War for his rumpled clothes and wide-brimmed straw hat. Although the battles pictured were from the War of 1812, Taylor's rank of major general suggests that the fan dates from the Mexican War, just prior to his receiving the Whig nomination for president in the election of 1848. The sticks are wood and the paper mount has silver painted highlights at the ends. The fan is housed in an attractive shadow box. The mount has a few slight tears at the folds, else, choice. From the Edward C. Gillette Collection.
