    Description
Benjamin Harrison: Folk Art Presentation Campaign Cane. 36 1/2" carved wooden cane, likely pine, with a dark stain applied and incised design elements and inscriptions. The handle is a slightly curved hand with the thumb tucked inward. The tapered shaft has images of the Indiana State House, the State Seal of Indiana and a log cabin. A scroll wraps around the shaft. It reads: "Gen. Benj. Harrison Nominated For President at the Chicago Convention June 1888." The cane was apparently a gift to the Republican candidate; however, he decided to "re-gift" it, as a silver plaque attached near the top indicates: "M. L. Haines from General Harrison Dec. 25, 1898." (What a neat Christmas gift! What are getting me for Christmas?) The Rev. Matthew L. Haines of Astoria, N.Y. was the minister at the First Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis which Benjamin Harrison and his family attended. Haines would preside at Harrison's funeral in 1901. The lot also includes a framed November 7, 1895 letter signed by Harrison sending a $25 contribution to Haines for the support of the Olive Street Church, plus a 1938 scholarly monograph on Harrison & Blaine presented to Haines and another man by the author.Auction Info
