Description
Civil War Carpet Bag and Leather Portmanteau Attributed to Medal of Honor Recipient John W. Clark. John Wesley Clark (1830-1898) enlisted as a 1st lieutenant of September 28, 1861. Shortly thereafter he was commissioned into the Field and Staff of the Vermont 6th Infantry. On July 28, 1863, near Warrenton, Virginia, Clark was severely wounded as he "had charge of a commissary supply train which was attacked by a band of Mosby's Gorillas." [Extracted from a copy of Clark's original Declaration for Original Invalid Pension]. His wounds came as a result of his trying to stop a six-mule train that was running away causing him to be run over by several horses and mules. The official citation reads: "Defended the division train against a vastly superior force of the enemy; he was severely wounded, but remained in the saddle for 20 hours afterward until he had brought his train through in safety". He was awarded the Medal of Honor on December 21, 1892. Included in the lot are: (1) Tooled-leather portmanteau, 20" x 12" x 9.5", manufactured by Atkins A. Clark, Boston. Stenciled in large letters on one end are the initials "JWC". Stenciled in smaller letters on one of the linen-covered dividers in the case is "J W Clark [illegible]". The case retains the original key. Some water staining otherwise in very good condition. (2) Carpetbag, 16" x 21", faintly marked on the inside lining with an identical stencil as was found on the inside of the portmanteau. One of the leather handles is broken, otherwise it is in very good condition. The lot comes with many postwar pension and disability documents, photocopied from the originals, some of which go into detail about the action in which Clark received his Medal of Honor.Auction Info
