Description

Civil War Artillery Gunner's Haversack, Watertown Arsenal 1864. Deeply marked in the center of the front flap "Watertown Arsenal 1864", and "U.S." The bag itself measures 12.75" x 12.75", with closure strap, buckle, and carrying straps. Leather is in very sound condition exhibiting light surface crazing on the bag and flap, heavier crazing on the straps. A very nice example of a Civil War artillery gunners haversack as used by the No. 4 gunner to transport the cartridge to the gun, in order to, at least in theory, to preclude the accidental ignition of the powder.
