Description
James Monroe Signed Land Grant. One page, 15.5" x 9", Washington; September 27, 1821. Signed by Monroe as President of the United States, this certificate grants George Foulks a parcel of land in the District of Wooster, Ohio. Signed, "James Monroe" and countersigned by the Commissioner of the U.S. Land Office, Josiah Meigs. Matted and framed with decorative plaque to an overall size of 24.75" x 25".Between 1798 and 1821, Congress authorized the sale of any remaining public lands in Ohio to private owners in an effort to populate the area. Known as "Congress Lands," these territories were divided into carefully surveyed grids and allotted to individual applicants. As one of the first settled territories in the Midwest, Ohio functioned as an important political and economic asset to the rapidly growing United States.
Condition: Creased along folds with toning throughout. Staining along center crease. Minor paper loss to top margin, not affecting text. Not examined outside of frame.
