Description
James Madison Signed Land Grant. One partially printed page, 14.62" x 8.25", Washington, [D.C.]; February 29, 1812. Signed by Madison as President of the United States, this document grants one-quarter of a lot north of Chillicothe, Ohio to Phillip Helsel. Between 1798 and 1821, Congress authorized the sale of any remaining public lands in the state to private owners in an effort to populate the area. Known as "Congress Lands," these territories were divided into carefully surveyed grids and allotted to individual applicants. As one of the first settled territories in the Midwest, Ohio functioned as an important political and economic asset to the rapidly growing United States. Docketed on verso. Signed "James Madison" and countersigned by Secretary of State James Monroe.Condition: Creased along folds with staining and foxing along the creases. Seal well preserved. Stain to upper left corner recto. Seal wax puckering paper on verso.
