Description

Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette Document Signed. One page (in French), 7 1/2 x 12 inches (sight), Paris; January 2, 1791. Matted and framed alongside an engraved portrait of Lafeyette to an overall size of 24 x 19 1/2 inches. Signed "Lafayette." In the midst of the French Revolution, Lafayette issues orders to Louis-Alexander Berthier, chief of staff to the Versailles National Guard, to form a regiment for the protection of his Majesty's properties at St. Cloud. Lafayette was the commander of the Parisian National Guard at the time he signed this order.

Condition: Not examined out of frame. Flattened folds, light creasing, light toning along top margin, and a small tear to the left edge above horizontal fold. Lafayette's signature is a bit light. Overall condition of the frame is very good, with no visible scratches and light wear.
