Description
Susan B. Anthony Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages on one leaf, 5.5" x 8.25" (sight), Chicago; March 25, 1876. Addressed to an unrecorded recipient on National Woman Suffrage Association letterhead, Anthony writes concerning the terms for delivering her speech "Woman Wants Bread, Not the Ballot!" She writes, in full:"I would like to give my lecture 'Woman wants bread; not the ballot' - in your place late in April or early in May - My terms may be $50 - If you, or any reliable party with the lecture - please write me by earliest mail - to care of Mr - Ira Howe Ottawa - Ill - and I will give you a date by return mail. Respectfully yours, Susan B. Anthony."
This speech was composed by Anthony after she was arrested, convicted, and fined $100 (which she refused to pay) for voting illegally in the 1872 Presidential election. It highlights the disenfranchisement of women and points out that over three million American women were working to support themselves "for the merest pittance" when compared to the much higher wages earned by men, yet were unable to cast a ballot for a candidate that might improve their station. The speech proved immensely popular and was performed frequently by Anthony throughout the 1880s. The letter is matted, framed, and double-glazed with a portrait of Anthony to an overall size of 15" x 13". This frame has been hinged to a larger frame for an overall size of 20.5" x 18.5". The letter has not been examined outside of the frame. The letter is accompanied by a COA from RR Auction.
Condition: Smoothed folds.
