Albert Einstein Typed Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 10",
Princeton, New Jersey; December 10, 1933. Letter in German on
Institute for Advanced Study School of Mathematics letterhead
addressed to Professor Morris R. Cohen. Here Einstein acknowledges
receipt of Cohen's recent book on the philosophy of law and
expresses his delight that Cohen is "defending reason,"
which Einstein writes "has come into disrepute in our degenerate
times." It reads, in full [English translation]:"I have received your book on the philosophy of law, but have read so little of it that I am unable to permit myself to say anything substantive regarding it. The only thing I have discerned, to my delight, is that you are duly defending reason, which has come into disrepute in our degenerate times. I am positive that this creation of your spirit will also give me great pleasure, like everything that has come before it." Signed, "A. Einstein."
Morris R. Cohen (1880-1947) was a Russian-born American philosopher. He taught philosophy at City College of New York from 1912 to 1938 and founded and edited the quarterly Jewish Social Studies with Salo W. Baron. In 1933, he founded the Conference on Jewish Relations to counter Nazi propaganda and the rising threat of fascism. Einstein presided over the conference in 1936. The letter is accompanied by an English translation, an LOA from PSA/DNA, and a black and white photograph of Einstein and Cohen measuring 7.5" x 4.75".
