Description

General Benjamin F. Butler Typed Letter Signed "Benj. F. Butler." One page, 7" x 9", Boston; March 18, 1885. Addressed to his successor as Governor of Massachusetts, William Gaston. A short letter, in full: "I can see you any time after half past three o' clock to-day about the matter which Mr. Greenough mentioned, and I want to see you about another matter."

Benjamin F. Butler (1818-1893) served in the Massachusetts Militia as a third lieutenant beginning in 1839. Most of his promotions and service, however, were based on his political position and gave him little experience and training for his upcoming struggle in the Union Army. Butler became military commander of Union-occupied New Orleans and was universally disliked by the population of the city for his authoritarian policies, earning him the nickname "Beast" Butler. After the war he served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1883-1884.

Condition: Flattened mail folds, with pinhole separation to fold intersections. Light uneven toning. Boldly signed.
