Description

Claude Monet Autograph Letter Signed. One page of a bifolium, 4.875" x 6.625", no place; February 18, 1914. Addressed to an unknown recipient on mourning stationery with "Giverny par Vernon. Eure" imprint. In French. Monet writes, in part [English translation]: "Thank you my dear friend for your affectionate sympathy... I must summon the courage to withstand these successive deaths." Signed, "Claude Monet".

Monet (1840-1926) moved with his family to Giverny in 1883 where he enjoyed continued artistic and commercial success for the rest of his life. Monet's son, Jean Monet, had died eight days earlier on February 10, 1914 after suffering a stroke. He had also lost his second wife, Alice Hoschedé, who had passed away three years earlier.

Condition: Very slight ink ghosting occurring at the time the letter was written. Smoothed folds.
