Description
Spectacular Large Half Plate Ambrotype of a Civil War Era Detective. This unidentified man is photographed with an earnest expression in a pose intended to convey strength and authority. As was not uncommon in those days the image has been enhanced with some gold accents: the shirt buttons, watch chain, ring, and most particularly a badge worn on his left lapel. The badge is not sufficiently detailed to make a firm identification, although it has been suggested that it resembles the badges worn by Pinkerton detectives. Beautiful condition, as is the embossed thermoplastic case. The image measures 4.25" x 5.5".Auction Info
