Description

Marie Antoinette Document Signed "Marie Antoinette" as queen. One page, 9.5" x 14.25", Versailles, France; December 31, 1785. Written in French and addressed to the Mayor and Treasurer General. The document is a pay order issued to the "dance master of our pages." At the time this was signed, Marie Antoinette was embroiled in the "Affair of the Diamond Necklace" scandal, where she was accused of attempting to acquire an extremely expensive necklace and defrauding the jewelers. She was, in fact, blameless in the scandal, but the event tarnished her public reputation and led to the French public's hatred of the queen.

Maria Antonia Josefa Johanna von Habsburg-Lothringen (1755 - 1793), known to history as Marie Antoinette, was the daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresa of Austria. She was married to Louis XVI of France at age 14, and was the mother of "the lost dauphin" Louis XVII. Marie Antoinette is perhaps best remembered for her legendary (and, some modern historians say, exaggerated) excesses, and for her death. She was executed by guillotine at the height of the French Revolution in 1793, for the crime of treason.

Condition: Flattened folds. Toning and foxing throughout. Professionally repaired tears using archival material at the edges and corners. Boldly signed.
