Description

Maximilien Robespierre Document Twice Signed. One page, 7 ¾ x 12 inches, Marseille; August 6, 1793. Decree regarding the Criminal Tribunal in the Department of Bouches-du-Rhône. Signed twice, "Robespierre." Accompanied by a letter of authenticity issued by PSA/DNA.

With Revolutionary France on the precipice of the Reign of Terror, the provisional government fought to consolidate power and bring the country under control. Only two days before this decree was signed, the French Constitution of 1793 was passed by the Convention. Although the constitution was immediately dismissed in favor of the violent institutions of the Reign of Terror, certain departments like Bouches-du-Rhône rebelled against the document. Robespierre signed this document in Marseille, the capital of the department, likely in an attempt to bring the region to heel.

Condition: Creased along flattened folds with deckled margins. Upper right corner is folded with a bit of paper loss at the top margin well away from any text. Minor ink smudges.
