Description
Jean Paul Marat Autograph Letter Signed. One page of a bifolium, 4 ¼ x 6 ½ inches, Paris; December 23, 1789. Letter in French to someone launching a lawsuit for slander against Marat. Marat expresses his displeasure at not having received a response to a previous letter and includes a copy. The recipient notes the context of the letter on the bottom half of the first page. Signed, "Marat."A prominent figure in the French Revolution, Marat became well-known for his radical views and advocacy for the lower classes. The Swiss-born physician was a early supporter of the revolution, using his newspaper, L'Ami du Peuple [The Friend of the People], to promote revolutionary sentiments. During the peak of political chaos in 1793, Marat was assassinated by Charlotte Corday, a supporter of a rival political faction.
Condition: Lightly toned with slight foxing to the first page. Small cut along the right margin, not affecting Marat's text.
