Description

Second Week of the War Union Soldier Love Letter. 4-page letter written in pencil on bifolium stationery, Springfield Barracks, April 23, 1861, from Eugene B. Payne to Delia. "Love bear up - be strong- I trust in God that we shall surely meet again. I have volunteered. I am now a United States soldier... I could not resist... The Gov. of our state issued his proclamation. The excitement grew more & more intense... I was one of the first three in Waukegan that enrolled... I got up a company & put them under two Zouaves in Chicago... I took an oath today to stand in the Union - to stand by my flag till it waved proudly over every state or it had become our winding sheet. I have enlisted for only three months. Delia, I shall return to you to love you ten times the more... but if De I should return a cripple - a poor pitiful cripple I say to you I will not compel you to marry me but twould break my heart Dearest to relieve you... if I do return a cripple it shall never be by a shot in the back. I shall never dear meet you as a returned coward... I shall think of you on the battlefield & my faith will make me brave." Poignant.
