Description

Thomas Jefferson Partial Ship's Papers Signed. One page, 8" x 7.5", New Haven; June 9, 1806. These passports were originally issued in four languages. Offered here is a partial document printed in English and Dutch to "William Thompson master or commander of the schooner called Resolution of the burthen of ninety three tons or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of New Haven bound for St. Bartholomeus and laden with horses, oxen, flour, pork." Signed, "Th. Jefferson." Countersigned by Collector of Customs Abraham Bishop.

Prior to his role as the Collector of Customs in New Haven, Bishop had an impressive career as an educational advocate and political organizer in New England. He is credited for introducing New Haven to the graded classroom and fought for increased public funding for schools as well as female education. An avid Democratic-Republican, Bishop despised Federalist policies and gave several speeches on the matter. During Thomas Jefferson's 1800 presidential campaign, Bishop published Connecticut Republicanism: An Oration, on the Extent and Power of Political Delusion, which criticized the Federalist platform and religious establishment in the state. As a reward for his campaigning efforts, Jefferson named Bishop's father the New Haven collector in 1801. Bishop succeeded his father in the position two years later.

Condition: Toned throughout with staining to the left margin, affecting text. Paper loss at all four margins with closed tears at the left margin repaired on verso with Japanese tissue. Minor staining throughout. Mounted with visible adhesive to upper and lower right corners verso, causing discoloration on the recto.
