John Adams Document Signed. One partially printed page, 15.5" x 10" (sight), Massachusetts; May 26, 1795. Nomination of Thomas Dawes to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Signed, "John Adams." Countersigned by Joseph Willard. Framed to an overall size of 16.75" x 11".

John Adams founded the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1780 and it exists today as one of the oldest learned societies in the United States. Adams, John Hancock, and sixty of their fellow patriots created the institution to promote values of scholarship and republicanism in the new nation. Adams served as the academy's president from 1791 to 1814.

The recipient of this nomination, Thomas Dawes, was a patriot in his own right. During the Revolutionary War, Dawes served as a colonel in the Massachusetts militia and later held numerous positions in the state government, including the Massachusetts Supreme Court. In addition to his political achievements, Dawes worked as an architect and built several buildings in Boston, including the Brattle Street Church and Hollis Hall at Harvard College.

In addition to the Adams' signature, this document includes autographs by three of Adams' scholarly contemporaries. It is countersigned by Joseph Willard, vice president of the academy and president of Harvard, and secretaries Eliphalet Pearson and Benjamin Dearborn. Pearson was also a president of Harvard and founded the American Education Society. Dearborn was an active inventor who created items such as the spring scale, the letter press, and the ballot box.

Condition: Document is toned throughout and creased along folds. Seal intact. Not examined outside of the frame. Frame is chipped and scuffed on all four sides.
