Description

Abraham Lincoln Autograph Note Signed "A. Lincoln" as President. One side of 3.5" x 2" card, [Washington, D.C.]; April 21, 1864. This unaddressed note from President Lincoln was probably sent to a telegraph officer in the War Department. Lincoln writes: "Please ascertain whether the message sent by me yesterday to Fort Warren, Boston Harbor was delivered. April 21, 1864. A. Lincoln."

Lincoln is doubtless referring to a telegram he sent the day before, April 20, to Stephen Cabot, Officer in Military Command at Fort Warren, Massachusetts, in which Lincoln inquired about one Charles Carpenter, who was under sentence of death for desertion. Lincoln requested that Cabot suspend the execution until further ordered and to send him the record of Carpenter's trial. Lincoln also wanted to know if Carpenter had been sentenced for any other offense and when he was scheduled to be executed. Lincoln was known for his willingness to pardon deserters.

Note is accompanied by an engraving of Lincoln.

Condition: The note has toning and residue of glue and paper from when it was attached to another surface; otherwise good.
