Description

Thomas Jefferson Franking Signature on a Cover Addressed in His Hand. 4 1/4 x 3 1/2 inches. Signed, "free / Th: Jefferson Pr. US." at top left near postmark from Washington dated October 11 [no year]. Made out to "Dr. William Bache near Charlottesville." Stamped "Free" at top right. Together with an engraved portrait of Jefferson, 7 3/4 x 10 3/4 inches, engraved by Johnson, Wilson & Co. after a painting by Alonzo Chappel.

William Bache (1773-1814) was a physician and scientist educated at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned advanced degrees in medicine and chemistry and helped found the Philadelphia Chemical Society. A grandson of Benjamin Franklin and brother of Benjamin Franklin Bache, he was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1797. In 1801, Jefferson appointed Bache to establish a hospital for American seamen in New Orleans, a post he held until returning to Philadelphia in 1804, where he later served as surveyor of the port.

Condition: Lightly toned with smoothed folds. Small separations at the folds, minor areas of loss and a few short, closed tears expertly repaired on the verso.
