President Lincoln discharges a POW at Elvira a month before his assassination

Abraham Lincoln Autograph Endorsement Signed on Verso of a Letter from William Wright. One page of a bifolium, 5 x 8 inches, Washington, D.C.; March 7, 1865. A letter from William Wright recommending that James Quintin, "a prisoner of war at Elvira," be allowed to take an oath of allegiance to the United States, and "be allowed to return to Charleston to his family." Lincoln writes on the verso, "Let this man to take the oath of Dec. 8, 1863, & his discharge. / A. Lincoln / March 7, 1865." Signed just one month before the President's assassination on April 15, 1865.

Also includes twentieth-century souvenir printing of the Gettysburg Address, two pages, 7 7/8 x 13 inches.

Condition: Lightly toned; smoothed folds with separations thereat, touching text but not affecting legibility; light, scattered staining throughout; moderate thumbsoiling on verso. Gettysburg Address is heavily toned with foxing throughout; fragile paper.
