Description

[Confederate States of America]. Robert H. Chilton Autograph Endorsements Signed (2). Two documents, each 8 x 10 inches, dated December 19, 1862 and May 16, 1863. Each endorsed on the verso by Lee's Chief of Staff, Robert H. Chilton, "R H Chilton." A trusted aide for much of the war, Chilton is best known for signing Special Order 191, the "Lost Order" that fell into Union hands just before the Battle of Antietam.

The first document is an autograph letter signed by Colonel Henry Brevard Davidson, written from Staunton, Virginia, to Captain John W. Riely. Davidson reports charges made against two officers: "...the charges against Col Hobson have been withdrawn, and asst surgeon Hamilton is with the army at Fredericksburg." Signed "H. B. Davidson / Col Com'dg."

Chilton adds his endorsement on the verso, dated January 19, 1863: "Resply returned. Withdrawal of ch'gs ass't Col Hobson confirmed. Of Surg'n Hamilton nothing is known of chgs. If forwarded with witnesses he can be brought before the courts here. By order Genl Lee / Hdqrs ANVA / R H Chilton." With additional endorsements by Major General Arnold Elzey and Major William S. Barton.

The second document, also signed by Davidson, is addressed directly to Chilton. Davidson seeks clarification of his powers relative to staff officers under his supervision: "I have the honor to request to be informed whether I have command of the Staff officers of this Post. The Ordnance Officer has received communication from Col. Gorgas stating that my order authorizing an issue is not good...I would like very much if you would issue an order defining my position..." Signed, "H. B. Davidson / Col Comdg."

Chilton replies on the verso, dated May 22, 1863, stating the policy of the army: "Resply returned. It has been decided in this Army, and confirmed by the Sec'y of War, that orders may be communicated directly to subordinates of their Depts by Cheifs [sic] of Staff in all matters relating to their Dep't...By order Gen Lee...R H Chilton." With an additional endorsement by "G W Chilton."

Condition: Each lightly toned with smoothed folds and a few light stains. December 19 document with two small separations at the folds, not affecting text. May 16 document with mounting remnants on the verso, just touching Davidson's signature.
