Description
Massachusetts Bay Colony Ale House License. One page, 7" x 8.25", Bristol, Massachusetts Bay Colony; July 13, 1708. Bristol County Court memorandum written and signed by John Cary, clerk, allowing Samuel Day and Edward Bishop "to Keep a Common Inn Ale-house" for a one-year term for the sum of "Ten pounds currant money of New England." The license was conditional that they not "sell any wine Liquours or other strong Drink to any Aprentices [sic] servants Indians or Negros." Docketed on verso. Documents limiting the rights of Blacks and Indians in the Massachusetts Bay Colony are extremely rare. This exemplar is dated 1708.Condition: Closed tear along left edge of horizontal fold crosses some text and has been repaired on verso with archival tape.
