Following his celebrated service during the Mexican War, Thomas Jonathan Jackson (1824-1863) began teaching at the Virginia Military Institute in the small town of Lexington during the spring of 1851. As professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy and Instructor of Artillery, the taciturn Jackson emphasized mobility, efficiency, and discipline. While at V.M.I., Jackson married, became a widower, married again, lost two children, bought his first house, and joined the Confederacy.

Graduate Legh Wilbur Reid went on to enlist in the Confederate Army as a lieutenant colonel on July 15, 1861. He was commissioned into the Virginia 36th Infantry and later served in the Virginia 17th Cavalry. He was wounded at the Battle of Fort Donelson on February 15, 1862, and again at the Battle of Tom's Brook in October 1864 where he lost a leg. He survived the war and returned to Alexandria.

Condition: The original light-blue silk riband is intact, with wear and a small bit of paper loss to the blue seal. Light stray stains throughout do not detract from the presentation. Not examined out of the frame.
