Description
James Buchanan Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 9.75"; Lancaster; July 6, 1844. Great political content letter as Senator from Pennsylvania to Henry Horn: "I have this moment received your kind letter of yesterday; & cordially unite with you in opinion that Polk & Dallas are candidates entirely worthy of the support of the Democracy. I recollect well our conversation respecting M. Van Buren. After I had declined & the Delegates from our State had been instructed to support him, I considered the question of his nomination settled: & I uniformly used what little influence I possessed to prevent any movements against him. All that I regret on the proceeding of the Baltimore Convention is that any of the Delegates from Pennsylvania, in opposition to my known will & express written instructions, should have cast their votes in my favor whilst M. Van Buren was in the field. But their conduct proceeded from friendly motives; and I have said nothing about it. Had M. Van Buren come out in favor of immediate annexation he would have been nominated without a struggle; and until the very last moment I was under the impression he would pursue the course. I regret most sincerely that our friends Wright & Benton have got rather into a false position on this question; as in my opinion, there are not two more devoted patriots or faithful Democrats in the Union..." Blind stamp at the top right corner.The Democratic Convention nominating James Polk and George Dallas was held in Baltimore six weeks prior to the date of this letter, at the end of May 1844. Although Martin Van Buren was believed to be the favorite, he lost the nomination because he was unwilling to support immediate annexation of Texas fearing that it would lead to an unjust war with Mexico. Despite Buchanan's stated support of Polk, he too was quietly vying for the presidential nomination. Polk would eventually be elected president later that year, and would name Buchanan his Secretary of State.
Condition: Flattened folds, and light toning and creasing throughout; with stray foxing. The number "103" is written in ink in an unknown hand at the top center.
