Description

[E. M. Forster]. 1904 Oliver Standard Visible Writer No. 3 (Serial Number 99534). 15" (L) x 14 1/2" (W) x 8 3/4" (H); on wooden platform 15 1/2" x 14 1/2" x 1/2". Black ribbon. Normal wear from use.

English author E.M. Forster had a well-known revulsion for machines of any kind, as documented in his 1909 short story, The Machine Stops. The author of books such as A Room With a View, Howard's End, and A Passage to India, wrote very few of his works on a typewriter. However, King's College, Cambridge holds at least three typescripts by Forster, including two typescript essays, both unpublished, titled "The Bugiale" and "The Facetiae of Poggio." Both typescripts have autograph manuscript amendments. King's College also holds a revised version of Forster's essay "Cornaro" in typescript, titled "Luigi Cornaro" and containing autograph manuscript amendments. Much of his correspondence was also typed, perhaps on this very typewriter. Accompanied by related ephemera.

Provenance: Bonhams, Knightsbridge, London, March 19, 2014, lot 193; From The Soboroff Typewriter Collection
