Description
Jackie Kennedy's Carolina Herrera Suit
[John F. Kennedy]. Jacqueline Kennedy Personally Worn
Houndstooth Jacket, Skirt, and Scarf on the 1959 Campaign Trail
with Her Husband, Senator John F. Kennedy. Designed by
Venezuelan-born, Carolina Herrera, this three-piece ensemble
comprises a skirt, jacket, and scarf of camel and burgundy wool in
a houndstooth pattern, with the jacket and skirt lined in red silk.
The skirt has hook-and-eye, as well as zipper closure on the back,
and the jacket has three-button and snap closure on the front. Both
skirt and jacket bear the designer's labels sewn in.Although JFK would not officially announce his campaign for Presidency until January, 1960, he was actively campaigning across the country informally throughout most of 1959. He travelled widely, giving speeches and public appearances from coast-to-coast. What began as a somewhat subdued, informal campaign changed dramatically by September 1959 when he created his core campaign advisors and appointed his campaign manager as his brother, Robert Kennedy.
He faced a number of challenges during his stops on the campaign trail since he was somewhat of an unknown, having completed only three terms as a Massachusetts Senator. He frequently encountered meager crowds, had to appear in a supporting role to local politicians, or given less stage time during stops to farm shows or union hall meetings.
Jacqueline accompanied him during this hectic time on the campaign trail and always appeared by the young Senator's side impeccably dressed. Jackie's fashion sense is well known and she had a personal affinity for Carolina Herrera's designs, famously wearing the designer's creations throughout her life.
Condition: The skirt lining shows some separation from the front left waist and has had some minor repair to secure the lining at the back left. Some stray threads and fraying along the internal waist. Fine.
Provenance: This beautiful three-piece ensemble was personally given to Jacqueline Kennedy's secretary, Mary Barelli Gallagher. Ms. Gallagher was formerly secretary to Senator John F. Kennedy from 1953-1956, then became Jackie's personal secretary from 1956-1964. Ms. Gallagher published a book related to her time with the Kennedys titled, My Life with Jacqueline Kennedy. From the Melvin "Pete" Mark, Jr. Collection
