Ross. Zupnik Enterprises, [1991].FIRST DRAFT SCREENPLAY, with a lengthy inscription by David Mamet on the title page. Quarto. Studio wrappers, play's title written in black felt tip marker on the spine and bottom edge. Mamet's inscription reads:
"Most good plays make rotten films - the play is only dialogue; and most film dialogue takes up the slack of boring images, or - equally otiose, recapitulates them. This script, however, was turned into a smashing film by James Foley. The play and the film are direct descents of The Front Page, which, as far as I know, established the new genre of the Gang-Drama - see, subsequently, the plays of Odets and Rice + Kingsley. In any case, here you have it. [signed] David Mamet, 12 April - 2023."
Adapted from Mamet's play of the same name, which first premiered in 1983 and won the Pulitzer Price in 1984. Mamet adapted his play into the 1992 film, also of the same name, featuring a powerful ensemble cast, including Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Kevin Spacey, and Jonathan Pryce. Notably, Mamet made a key addition to the screenplay in the character "Blake," played by Alec Baldwin, who famously threatens the underperforming salesmen with, "First prize is a Cadillac Eldorado... Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired."
