Clyde Tombaugh's Handmade 6-inch Reflector Telescope. An
intriguing and utilitarian creation by legendary astronomer and
discoverer of Pluto, Clyde Tombaugh. Standing approximately 53
inches tall upon 29-inch wide portable base, this telescope was
used by Tombaugh primarily as a teaching instrument. After he
departed his position at the Lowell Observatory in 1945, Clyde
worked at White Sands Missile range in the 1950's, before becoming
an astronomy professor at New Mexico State University. He
discovered his love for teaching here, which he continued to do
informally throughout his life.This passion for helping others see and understand the skies led to him creating this portable telescope in 1975. Even though he had a storied career with access to the most technologically advanced equipment available, he relied on his sentiment to create with rudimentary tools and discarded remains to innovate. He created another incredibly useful and unique instrument using his 1949 Ford driveshaft as the equatorial yoke and the shot put from his high school track and field events as the counterweight. It is quite fascinating that while Tombaugh was collecting accolades and awards for his work, including induction into the International Space Hall of Fame and receiving the American Academy of Achievement's Golden Plate, he continued to create these engaging and charismatic telescopes.
