Description

[Revolutionary War]. Partially Printed Certificate of Service. One page, 8 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches, Pigeon Hill, Georgia; April 26, 1784. A partially printed certificate of service for Edward Maxwell, granting him land for his service according to an act passed after the Siege of Augusta. The document reads, in part: "This is to certify, That Edwa [Edward] Maxwell hath stedfastly done his duty, from the time of passing an Act at Augusta, to wit, on the 20th of August, 1781, until the total Expulsion of the British from this state."

After the Patriots' victory at the Siege of Augusta, the Georgia State Legislature passed multiple bills to stabilize its control and encourage military enlistment, including a bill that granted land to soldiers who swore an oath to Georgia. This certificate was issued to prove that the soldier, Edward Maxwell, completed his service and could not "be convicted of plundering or distressing the country," offenses that would have voided the grant. On the verso, Maxwell writes, "your petitioner prays your Honb'le board to grant him a warrant on the within Certificate in the County of Washington."

Condition: Moderately toned. Uneven edges with some wear, and scattered paper loss throughout, not affecting readability. Docketed on the verso.
