Description

Inscribed to one of the typists for Ulysses

James Joyce. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. London: The Egoist Press, 1921.

Third English edition, bound from Huebsch sheets from the third American edition. Inscribed by the author to the French poet Raymonde Linossier, one of the typists Joyce used for Ulysses: "To / Raymonde Linossier / James Joyce / Paris / 23.xi.'921." Octavo. Publisher's green cloth, front board stamped in blind, spine lettered and ruled in gilt. Housed in a custom quarter green morocco and green cloth slipcase with matching green cloth chemise, spine lettered in gilt.

The presentee, Raymond Linossier, a truly remarkable woman, was a lawyer, an archivist-librarian, a poet, and the muse of the famed French composer Francis Poulenc. Poulenc, a close friend of Ezra Pound, helped Linossier publish her extraordinary work, "Bibi-la-Bibiste," in Vol. VII, No. 3, of The Little Review, alongside Episode XIV ("Oxen of the Sun") from Joyce's Ulysses. Shortly thereafter, Joyce, in one of several crises which arose during the composition and publication of Ulysses, due particularly to his failing eyesight, enlisted Linossier to help prepare a workable copy text for the final sections of the novel. At this point in the editing process, Joyce had famously written and rewritten the "Circe" episode to near unintelligibility. Linossier, schooled by Joyce in the intricacies of his prose, graciously agreed, though she only managed to transcribe Joyce's corrected proofs for some 70 pages before a family illness drew her away. Joyce ultimately thanked her for her efforts in the most profound way possible - he included her in the very episode she helped to transcribe. As Leopold Bloom wanders around Nighttown in "Circe," he is made to remark, "Even their wax model Raymonde I visited daily to admire her cobweb hose and stick of rhubarb toe, as worn in Paris."

Condition: Minor edgewear, corners a touch bumped, boards lightly scuffed, head and tail pushed, spine a trifle sunned. Text block edges toned, top edge dusted and lightly foxed; small split at top of rear hinge, pencil notations to pastedowns, acquisition sticker to front pastedown with corresponding offsetting, endpapers foxed. A few stray ink marks to margins, small closed tear to top of final text leaf. Otherwise, internally clean and tight. Overall, a near-fine copy.
