Description
Margaret Taylor: Ninth-Plate Daguerreotype of the First Lady. Cased portrait of Margaret "Peggy" Mackall Smith Taylor, wife of the 12th President of the United States, Zachary Taylor. According to family lore, this image of Mrs. Taylor was carried by Zachary Taylor during all his travels and military campaigns. It is housed in a dark burgundy leather case that measures 2.25" x 3". The cover is detached. President and Mrs. Taylor had four children. She survived her husband by only two years, passing in 1852. According to our research, there is only one other known photograph of the First Lady, currently in private hands. The image comes from direct descendents of Zachary Taylor and has been handed down in the family. A copy of the line of descent, or provenance, on Taylor Family stationery, will be included in the lot. The image is highly reflective with perimeter solarization (a "halo") and scattered spotting.Auction Info
