LIMITED EDITION, number 67 of 100 copies. PRESENTATION COPY inscribed and signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt to longtime White House staffer Toinette "Toi" Bachelder, "For Toi, Christmastide 1944, from Franklin D. Roosevelt." Slim 4to. Publisher's vellum-backed marbled paper boards, black leather spine label stamped in gilt. Top edge gilt. Housed in the original slipcase.

Roosevelt's famous D-Day Prayer was originally entitled "Let Our Hearts Be Stout," and was read to the nation over the radio on the evening of the D-Day invasion, June 6, 1944, while American, British, and Canadian troops were fighting to establish beachheads on the coast of Normandy, France. The previous night, June 5, the President announced on the radio that Allied troops had entered Rome. The spectacular news that Rome had been liberated was quickly surpassed by news of the gigantic D-Day invasion, which began at 6:30 a.m. on June 6. By midnight, about 57,000 American and 75,000 British and Canadian soldiers had gotten ashore. Allied losses on D-Day included 2,500 killed and 8,500 wounded.

The last wartime White House Christmas book. These specially bound copies were given as gifts exclusively to the President's closest friends, family, and select Cabinet members and are rarely encountered, with only a handful of other inscribed copies found offered for auction in the past forty years.

Condition: A few minor scuffs to boards, else fine.
