Receipt for provisions for the Mexican officers captured at San Jacinto

William Hardin Handwritten and Signed Receipt for Provisions for the Mexican Prisoners of War Captured at San Jacinto. One page, 8 x 7 inches; Liberty, Texas; September 10, 1836. A receipt listing "Twenty five Beeves... one Keg Lard... 350 lbs Pickeld Pork... [and] 150 [lbs.] Bacon" for the "use of the Mexican Prisoners and Guard stationed at Liberty." Hardin certifies that the provisions were purchased for the stated use "by authority and instructions received for his excellency the President [interim president David G. Burnet]." Signed, "Wm Hardin / Judge." With two filing dockets on verso.

After the Battle of San Jacinto, Hardin housed Mexican officers, most notably General Martin Perfecto de Cos, until 1837 at his plantation in Liberty. Hardin was an early settler in Liberty and was a leader of the colonists during the Anahuac Disturbances. He served as a delegate to the Convention of 1833 in San Felipe de Austin and was the first judge for Liberty.

Condition: Light toning and offsetting. Flattened folds, with some wear. Two small separations and a minor tear at top right have been repaired with archival tape. Small hole at top margin not affecting any text. Multiple small tears and chips along edges.
