Description

Benjamin Franklin Franking Signature on a Cover Addressed in His Hand. Folded down to 4" x 3.25". Signed "Free / B Franklin" near the lower left corner. The panel is addressed in Franklin's hand, "To / Mrs. Kath. Green / Rhodeisland." Red wax seal on the verso.

It is likely that the recipient of this letter, Katherine Green, was Rhode Island native, Catharine Ray Greene, the wife of Rhode Island governor, William Greene. Benjamin Franklin and Catharine Greene were close friends who corresponded for over thirty years, from 1755 until 1789.

This free frank was from the Dr. John L. Robertson Collection of United States Free Franks that was sold during Siegel Auction Galleries' November 2004 sale.

Condition: Toned with spots of foxing. Area of minor paper loss at the lower left corner has been archivally repaired. Restoration to the upper right corner and small tears at the upper edge. Light soiling along the right edge.
