Description
Benjamin Franklin Document Signed "B. Franklin Presdt" as President of Pennsylvania. One page, 7.75" x 6.5", Philadelphia; May 23, 1786. Addressed to Treasurer David Rittenhouse, requesting that a payment of £125 be paid to Hon. Charles Biddle Esquire, "being one quarters Salary due to him as Vice President of the State, and ending the tenth Instant." At the bottom margin is an additional note that verifies the receipt of the money, signed by John Scull.The document is mounted along the top edge to a page in a large volume entitled, Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. Boston: Houghton Mifflin & Company, 1906. A special edition of 1,000 copies. The biography also includes letters signed by John Bigelow, William Carmichael, F.T. Caldwell, and Peter Collinson. Small quarto. xx, 183 pages, with 24 unnumbered leaves of plates featuring facsimiles, a map, and portraits. A red leather-bound volume with gilt lettering and decoration at the spine. Five raised bands. Marbled endpapers.
Franklin had been unanimously elected as the sixth president of Pennsylvania on October 18, 1785, replacing John Dickinson. The position was very similar to what is now recognized as governor.
Condition: Toning and mail folds to the note, with minor chipping at the edges. Two archival tape stripes on verso. Boldly signed by Franklin. Light rubbing to the spine and corners of the volume. Toning to the internal pages. Soundly bound.
