Description
Mark Twain. Salesman's Sample of Mark Twain's Following the Equator. Second state. Hartford, Connecticut: The American Publishing Company and New York: Doubleday & McClure Co., 1897. Second state of the salesman's sample with double imprint on the title page, complete list of Contents (ending on page 18), complete list of Illustrations, photograph of Twain with his wife and one of his daughters replaced with a full-page illustration facing the first leaf of text for Chapter I (photograph removed before publication at Twain's insistence).Octavo. Consists of a description of the bindings (printed on tissue in red), short description of the illustrations (printed on tissue in red), a few sample inserted photographs and other illustrations, sample text leaves, Publisher's Announcement, Conditions of sale, "It is sold exclusively by authorized agents, and can be obtained from no other source," and pages of blank subscription forms, no orders filled-in. Bound in blue cloth, color pictorial and gilt illustration stamped on front cover, sample gilt lettered and decorated spine stamped on rear cover. White endpapers, all edges trimmed. Front pastedown with sample bindings, "Library Style, Calf Effect" and "Half Morocco," both stamped in gilt.
Condition: Minor wear to cloth, generally confined to edges and joints, a few small stains, spine a bit frayed, gilt remains bright. Moderate offsetting to Bindings leaf facing front pastedown, description of the illustrations possibly inserted later as there is no offsetting to that leaf but there is offsetting to the following fly leaf. A few chips and tears, minor losses, front hinge weak. Scattered foxing, slight toning. A very good example of this salesman's sample, unused.
