Description
Mark Twain. Salesman's Sample of Mark Twain's Following the Equator. First state. Hartford, Connecticut: The American Publishing Company, 1897. First state of the salesman's sample with a single imprint on the title page, partial list of Contents (ending on page 12), no list of illustrations (added in the second state), with the photograph of Twain with his wife and one of his daughters facing the first leaf of text for Chapter I (removed before publication at Twain's insistence).Octavo. Consists of a short description of the illustrations to come (printed on tissue in red), a few sample inserted photographs and other illustrations, partial Contents list, sample text leaves, Publisher's Announcement, Conditions of sale, "It is sold exclusively by authorized agents, and can be obtained from no other source," and pages of blank subscription forms, seven orders filled out in pencil or ink. Bound in blue cloth, color pictorial and gilt illustration stamped on front cover, sample gilt lettered and decorated spine stamped on rear cover. White endpapers, all edges trimmed. Front pastedown with sample bindings, "Library Style, Calf Effect" and "Half Morocco," both stamped in gilt.
Condition: Cloth moderately rubbed and soiled, some edgewear. Ink stains and offsetting to verso of frontispiece from sample bindings (lacking free endpaper), names written in ink on rear pastedown. Ink notation to Pudd'nHead Maxims leaf, scattered soiling and foxing throughout, a few small tears in the margins. Still, a good or better example of this salesman's sample, clearly used to garner subscriptions.
