Description

E. B. White. The Trumpet of the Swan. New York, Evanston, and London: Harper & Row, Publishers [1970].

8vo. Pictures by Edward Frascino. Publisher's blue cloth, spine stamped in gilt and silver, front board stamped in gilt. Original illustrated dust jacket.

FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the half-title: "For Reggie / that dreamer - / who failed, with me, to / experience that 'day that will live in tympani.' / But thanks anyway. / Andy White."

White signs as "Andy," a nickname bestowed upon him while attending Cornell University, where tradition dictates that any male student with the last name White, be called "Andy" after co-founder Andrew Dickson White. It is likely "Reggie" was a fellow Cornell student.

Condition: Touch of edgewear to cloth, corners just bumped. Front lower flap of dust jacket clipped, price retained (priced "$4.50" at top), "1970 Honor Book" sticker to front panel, minor edgewear to jacket, lightly scuffed.

Provenance: Reggie (presentation inscription); acquired from Bauman Rare Books, Philadelphia and New York. From the William A. Strutz Library.
