Description

E. B. White. The Fox of Peapack and Other Poems. New York and London: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1938.

8vo. Publisher's green cloth, spine and front board stamped in black and gilt; original illustrated dust jacket; quarter morocco slipcase.

FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO CORNELL UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR, BRISTOW ADAMS, on the front free endpaper: "Had I the gift again to be / The likely lad that once was me. / My step would take me straight & true / To find the man that still is you - / To Bristow Adams, against / whom the charge was brought / that he was too friendly with / the students. / Andy (or, if you must, E. B.) White."

White signs as "Andy," a nickname bestowed upon him while attending Cornell University, where tradition dictates that any male student with the last name White, be called "Andy" after co-founder Andrew Dickson White.

Bristow Adams (1875-1956), was a journalist, illustrator, and professor who taught at Cornell University for over 30 years. He co-founded the oldest humor magazine in the west and the third oldest continually published humor magazine in the world, the Stanford Chaparral. Adams was a mentor to White, who, along with authoring numerous now-classic children's books, was also an important and prolific staff writer and contributor to The New Yorker for six decades.

Condition: Touch of edgewear to cloth. Dust jacket decoratively clipped, retaining price ("$2.00"); a few chips and short tears; other edgewear; some wear to front panel; rear panel somewhat scuffed.

Provenance: Bristow Adams (presentation inscription). From the William A. Strutz Library.
