Susan Orlean. The Orchid Thief. New York: Random House, [1998]. First edition, second printing, with number line "9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2" on the copyright page. Signed by the author. Octavo. 284, [4] pages. Publisher's navy paper over boards stamped in blind, spine stamped in metallic blue; original photographic dust jacket by Lisa Charles Watson and designed by Robbin Schiff. Head and foot of spine just pushed. Illustrated endpapers. Internally clean and tight, top and tail edges trimmed, fore-edge rough trimmed. Dust jacket unclipped ($25.00). Fine.The story was adapted to film in 2002, directed by Spike Jonze and with a screenplay by Charlie Kaufman. Interestingly, the film portrays Kaufman's own journey to adapt Orlean's story while suffering from writer's block and stars Nicolas Cage, Meryl Streep, and Chris Cooper alongside a star-studded cast. The film garnered four Academy Award nominations of which it won one.
