First edition, first issue, with the Fireside plate and no mention of Dickens on the title-page. Three octavo volumes. [ii], 331, [1, blank]; [ii], 307, [1, blank]; [ii], 315, [1, blank] pages; bound without half-titles, volume one lacking ads and list of illustrations; numerous plates illustrated by George Cruikshank inserted throughout. Contemporary three-quarter dark green morocco over marbled boards; five raised bands, compartments lettered and ruled in gilt; top edges gilt, others rough trimmed; marbled endpapers. Board detached, only rear joint of first volume intact; spine ends worn; few small scuffs to spine compartments of second volume; corners bumped with boards exposed. Some leaves and plates faintly browned; occasional marginal creasing or soiling. A good, or better, set with nice text-blocks. Eckel, pp. 59-63. Podeschi (Gimbel) A27. Cohn 239.
