4to (205 x 151 mm). Half-title. Late 19th-century green morocco, spine richly gilt, covers with central garland surrounded by elaborately tooled borders after a celebrated binding by Roger Payne, edges gilt, by Riviere & Son.

FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S FIRST SEPARATE PUBLICATION, with the very rare half-title present. Published ten days before his twenty-third birthday (and preceded only by publication of the poem 'Pastorals' and two pieces of criticism in 1709 in Poetical Miscellanies), An Essay on Criticism contains some of the most well-known lines in the English Language, including "To err, is human, to forgive divine", "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread" and "A little learning is a dangerous thing". The imprint is recorded in two states: as above, or without the addition of the three booksellers' names.

Condition: Minor rubbing to joints and spine extremities. Lacking final singleton leaf of advertisements (as often); light even toning throughout.
