FIRST EDITION of one of the most influential books of its time. It was selected for the Grolier Club exhibition One Hundred Influential American Books "because [of] Lowell's bitter criticism of the conduct of the Mexican War and opposition to the extension of slavery, all part of his passionate devotion to liberty and country" (Grolier). A BRILLIANT COPY.

Condition: Slightest touch of rubbing to foot of spine, otherwise a remarkably fine copy.

Condition: A little wear to spine ends; spine and label slightly darkened and rubbed; short split to upper joint near head; boards a little rubbed; slight spotting to endpapers.
