FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the dedication page: "James Carleton Young. / A Lover of books - / Health to him! / Lew. Wallace / Crawfordsville, / Aug. 26th, 1903." With a card signed: "Lew. Wallace" laid in. The uncommon first issue with the dedication "To the Wife of My Youth" and the publication date on the title page.
James Carleton Young (1856-1918) was a bibliophile and internationally renowned collector of literature. He frequently contacted contemporary authors, requesting that the authors inscribe his first editions. Some of his many accolades include being named honorary commissioner to the Paris exposition of 1878, elected as one of the three foreign members to the Société Des Amis Des Livres in Paris, awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor in 1910, and made a Fellow to the Royal Geographical Society of London.
Condition: Spine sunned, some staining to cloth, edgewear. Some staining to title page. Laid-in signed card with minor soiling.
