Description

John Woolman. A Word of Remembrance and Caution to the Rich. Dublin: Printed for T. M. Bates, for R. M. Jackson, 1793.

12mo. With first blank leaf [A1]. Contemporary marbled boards with vellum corner tips, rebacked in modern calf.

FIRST EDITION. This essay by the American Quaker abolitionist John Woolman was first published posthumously in Dublin, though believed to have been written around 1763-64. Woolman critiques the dangers of wealth accumulation and its potential to corrupt virtue and lead to social injustice. A London edition followed in 1794, and an American edition in 1803 (Burlington, New Jersey), with the Fabian Society reprinting the tract at the end of the 19th century. The title reads "by John Woolman, of Mount-holly, in New-Jersey, who died in the year 1772."

Condition: Spine rebacked in modern calf to style, boards rubbed. Apparently lacking a final leaf, presumably blank (but penultimate blank leaf present); occasional minor spot or soiling.
