Description
William H. Prescott. History of the Conquest of Peru. London: Richard Bentley, 1847.2 volumes, 8vo. Engraved frontispieces. Contemporary full deep maroon morocco, covers with blindstamped intersecting geometric design incorporating elaborate gilt floral ornaments, spines in five compartments with four raised bands, gilt-lettered in two, a repeated blindstamped and gilt design similar to covers in two, and with gilt arms in lower compartments, edges gilt.
FIRST EDITION, preceding the American edition by at least a month, PRESENTATION COPY. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO THE POET SAMUEL ROGERS on a note tipped-in at front of Vol. I: "Samuel Rogers, Esqr / With the affectionate Regards of / the Author. / Boston, US. / Nov. 7. 1855." With a purchase note presumably in the hand of Viscount Wolseley on front free endpaper verso facing the presentation slip: "Presentation copy from Prescott to Rogers. See the letter forwarding it. Bought at Mr. Roger's sale, May 1856."
Field Marshal Garnet Joseph Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley (1833-1913), was a pivotal Anglo-Irish British Army officer renowned for his victories in Canada, West Africa, and Egypt, as well as his significant role in modernizing the British Army.
Condition: Some wear to joints and spine ends with a few chips, some rubbing and scuffing to spines, corners a little bumped and worn, board edges rubbed.
