Oliver Goldsmith. Retaliation: A Poem... Including Epitaphs on the most Distinguished Wits of this Metropolis. London: Printed for G. Kearsly, 1774.

4to (ca. 283 x 224 mm). Half-title. Later plain blue wrappers, sewn, uncut; cloth folder and quarter morocco folding case.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the six errors recorded by Williams, plus an unlisted error on p. 10, line 9, "left" for "lost"; without the 4 leaves of explanatory leaves issued later. This copy is the variant without the license notice beneath the vignette on title (as in the BL copy). Some copies have the words "Published as the Act directs 18th April 1774" below the engraved portrait on the title-page. Following Goldsmith's absence at one of the meetings of his friends, they made a collection of epitaphs on him, this was Goldsmith's "retaliation."

Condition: Dampstain along fore-edge of front wrapper. Half-title soiled; horizontal crease from earlier folding; title slightly soiled; quire A (half-title and title-page) slightly shorter; some toning or soiling to some deckle edges.

Provenance: Purchased from C. A. Stonehill, New Haven, Connecticut, 8 April 1972. From the William A. Strutz Library.
